Regent Explorer Rome to Lisbon

November 18 @ 8:00 am - November 28 @ 5:00 pm

Join me on Regent Explorer’s “Taste of Iberia” cruise November 18-November 28, 2018.  I plan to share the following presentations:

The Last Lincoln Conspirator.  Flee with John Surratt, Jr., the youngest Lincoln assassination conspirator, across the Atlantic, Europe, and the Mediterranean as he attempted to escape from judgement and justice in 1865-66.  Chased out of Rome, where he hid for a time as a member of Pope Pius IX’s Papal Zouaves, Surratt fled from Naples through Malta and across the Mediterranean.  He was eventually caught in Alexandria, Egypt, and returned in chains to Washington for trial.
Innocents Abroad.  Sail with Mark Twain and the other American “Innocents Abroad” from New York in 1867 aboard the luxury cruise ship SS Quaker City across the Mediterranean and back.  See the sights of 19th century Europe and its ports  and the wonders of the Holy Land through their eyes, while you learn about the historic cruise and the passengers his best-selling book made famous.
The Epic Naval battle of Lepanto.  Learn how the Holy League’s fleet under the command of Don Juan of Austria shattered the Ottoman Turks’ navy in the Mediterranean in a decisive battle famous in art and poetry.  Both sides appealed for and expected divine assistance.  The costly victory at sea—tens of thousands drowned—helped establish the line between Muslim and Christian worlds for centuries.  (Don Juan’s flagship was built at what is now Barcelona’s waterfront Mesu Maritim; home of a splendid replica of the huge galley.)
